Personal Statement
Welcome to my portfolio! My name is Tyler Richman and I am a GIS Developer residing in North Carolina, USA.
I am employed at Eastern Research Group (ERG), where I'm trusted to use my technical skills to help scientists gain insights into our planet's most pressing issues which include air quality, environmental justice, and climate change.
I've had a fascination for natural sciences and our planet from an early age which led me to dual major in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science & Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland.
This gave me both a physical and information-based understanding of our planet.
I learned to computer program with Python during my undergraduate studies and participated in several internships where I utilized this skill to develop tools that support scientific research.
Throughout my tenure at ERG, I've automated numerous workflows with ArcGIS Toolboxes, Jupyter Notebooks, and Python/R applications.
Project leads recognize the massive benefits that result from workflow automation which include substantial improvements in efficiency as well as reduction in human error.
Some project managers have felt apprehensive to automate workflows as they themselves don't understand the code and therefore feel that "the project is slipping from their control".
As a scientific programmer, I strive to provide maximum transparency through pseudocode, documentation, and outputs that can be compared to manual quality control checks.
I am also committed to developing a thorough understanding of these scientific topics within the context of the big picture to maximize the scalability and effectiveness of a tool.
I'm currently enrolled in Johns Hopkins University's M.S. Geographic Information Systems program where I aim to expand my GIS and scientific programming capabilities to develop tools involving advanced geospatial problems, big data, and artificial intelligence.
